Africa calls!

Guy Boggs, Dimity and daughter Tanami are heading to southern Africa, UK and US for a five month sabbatical.

Guy will be working on a project that will examine the response of landscape pattern and heterogeneity in southern African savannas to different fire regimes across a rainfall gradient. The study will take advantage of advances in high resolution satellite remote sensing and image classification algorithms, using Quickbird multispectral imagery and object based image analysis techniques to map fine-scale woody vegetation patterns across the study sites. These maps will be analysed using a number of measures of landscape pattern and diversity based on patch theory.

The study will look at long term fire monitoring plots established in low to medium rainfall areas of Kruger National Park and will examine high rainfall sites in Hluhluwe National Park.

Guy is looking forward to the field work, but is not sure how he will go keeping one eye out for lions and the other on the tape measure! The project will involve collaborations with staff from Kruger and Hluhluwe National Parks, Oxford University, Leeds University and the University of Cape Town.
